I-Create Makerspace, Reflections on the First Month

Your Islander I-Create Lab has come together.  By the time you read this, our final major piece should be in place, our large format printer!  It has the ability to print on a variety of materials including window clings, stickers, and yes even paper.  It’s 54 inches wide and can print to the length of the roll!  I did say LARGE!  I cannot wait to see what it will produce for the creative talents on the island.

Has it been a month already? Time does indeed fly when you are busy and busy having fun.  Although our official open house was officially schedule two weeks after the beginning of the semester, the I-Create doors opened January 14.  The setting up and opening of our Islander makerspace started as a massive learning exercise for your friendly I-Create staff.  We were reading manuals and leaning to create our own projects.  We were operating on our own ad hoc, “see one, do one, teach one.”  We wanted the phrase, and still do, “I don’t know how.” to be uttered only once.

With our new knowledge and some sample work, and let us not forget decorations, we hosted the multi-day I-Create Open House.  We would like to take a moment to thank all the people who came out to attend a workshop, the volunteers who shared their work and knowledge, and those who came to play or just look around.  The open house was capped off by the well-attended Center for Faculty Excellence’s Faculty and Staff Mixer.

It was at this time we gained two new additions on loan to the lab.  The first is the popular and addictive Drawing Machine created by Professor Roeder.  People are having a hard time walking by without giving it a try, some many, many tries.  The second has become our unofficial mascot, or maybe official.  We invite you to come a meet Professor Katz’s BrickBot Luigi.  He is usually active from 10 am to 4 pm, and is a telepresence robot, allowing people from around the world to visit us in the I-Create space.
