Get on Your Bikes and Ride: Cycling and You

You’re stuck in traffic, people are cutting you off, and you’re not sure if you will make it to campus on time. Cruising down the bike lane, you see a cyclist. Unimpeded by traffic, they whiz past you with ease. You’re left wondering, “Should I get out of this cage and start biking to the university?” Yes, yes you should. But why?

Well, for starters, Cycling is a great way to cut the cost of gas, so say hasta la vista to gas pumps. The only fuel you will need now is food and water. So why not? Fuel your body instead of burning your money driving your vehicle.

And while you’re riding, take notice of how much better the scenery is. Now that you don’t have that pesky windshield in front of you, you’re now free to feel the wind flow by you. Prepare to be completely immersed in the elements the day brings. Whether it be hot, cold, wet, or windy, there really isn’t a better way to connect with the outdoors than on a bike. Be sure to dress accordingly.

Riding a bike to commute seems great but, should I ride for fun too? Yes. Go on an adventure. In fact, the campus has its very own hike/bike trail that snakes along the rear of the island. You will find mini hills to ride and wonderful views of the bay. On a path surrounded by brush, it almost serves as an escape from the city.

Riding is fun and all, but it’s also great cardio. That’s right! When you’re out there rolling around, you are also exercising. It’s so amazing that whether you’re going to work, class, or just riding around to take in the scenery, you’re also putting in a workout. It just doesn’t get any better than that!

But one thing that’s not all fun and games is safety! Always, always, always wear a HELMET! You’re at a university, so why wouldn’t you want to protect your brain? And please, when riding, always be sure to follow the law and city ordinance. While riding on campus, be aware of pedestrians and the labeled dismount zones.
