Stories from the Library – Lorin Flores

“I was influenced by two of my friends who were already librarians, and I was lucky to have the pleasure of working with them both during my first professional library job.

My main hobbies are historical, gothic, and steampunk costuming, going to concerts, cooking, watching so-bad-they’re-good and cult movies, and hanging out with horses when I can.

One of the most interesting experiences I have had happened in my first professional librarian job. I was at work one day at the library and the cast and crew of MTV’s Road Rules showed up on campus. One of the contestants was tasked with the challenge to find both a random student with an overdue book and a librarian who would be willing to bungee jump with him from a crane set up in a nearby campus parking lot. I agreed and got permission to bungee jump while at work with the contestant and a student volunteer. I honestly don’t remember if the contestant won this particular challenge or not. I did get to appear on MTV for about 5 seconds screaming in abject terror while falling backwards into the void from 150 feet in the air, tied to two complete strangers.

Also, once I was about to give a presentation (on libraries in Second Life actually) at a TLA conference and someone stole my co-presenter’s purse. I saw the man grab her purse and I went to confront him. He started running and I chased him across the convention center and out the door but didn’t catch him. It was exciting but I managed to make it back just as the presentation time slot was beginning and gave my presentation a little out of breath.”
