Kaitlyn’s response to Option 2:
The tradition of carving pumpkins originally started in early 17th century Ireland. The Gaelic tradition of Samhain had the Irish carving root vegetables like turnips and potatoes to acts as lanterns to help guide celebrators during the Samhain tradition of visiting houses for food and drinks. When the Great Potato Famine hit Ireland in the 1840’s, many Irish people immigrated to the United States where they were introduced to the winter squash, most famous of which is the pumpkin. Pumpkins were bigger and easier to carve, as well as in great abundance in the United States compared to potatoes or turnips, thus they became the standard for Samhain traditions as the Irish continued their celebrations of the holiday.
