Missing is a movie released in 2023 directed by Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick. The movie follows June, played by Storm Reid, as she searches for her mother who has gone missing after going on vacation to Columbia. What makes this movie unique is the fact that the whole movie is seen through computer and phone screens. There are no scenes in the movie that are filmed traditionally.

Here at the I-Know office in the Mary and Jeff Bell Library we are all about research skills and digital information. That is why this movie caught our attention. The whole plot of the movie focuses on June trying to find her mom by looking through digital information in her mom’s accounts and any other traces she may have left through her digital footprint.

The film perfectly captures the first two steps of I-Know’s student learning objectives. The two steps being Find and Evaluate. The major storyline that runs throughout the movie focuses on her finding information relevant to her mom’s disappearance and then evaluating its validity and usefulness. The way the movie is shot contributes even more to this aspect. We see all the online investigation that June performs and all her strategies she uses to find useful information.

Through these film making methods, the film keeps building on the existing tension as June slowly gets closer and closer to the truth with every new discovery she makes. The film takes you on a digital journey full of many unexpected twists and turns that manage to keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat until the very end of the movie.
